Tick and Flea Control in Vero Beach

Ticks continue to be an issue across the U.S. and Florida is no stranger to them. Ticks carry disease that can easily be transmitted to your family or pets. Luckily, the barrier treatment we use for your mosquito control also works as a tick control treatment and can eliminate up to 95% of ticks on your property. Following the same concept for mosquito control, we will treat surfaces that include shrubbery and foliage (avoiding flowers), around and underneath decks and patios, and tall grass. For this treatment, we will especially focus on the tall grass areas on your property since this is typically the habitat you can find them breeding, resting and feeding.

Tick-Borne Disease

Common diseases carried by ticks in the Florida area include ehrilichiosis, anaplasmosis , Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Lyme Disease

People can get Lyme disease through the bite of a blacklegged tick (deer tick) that is infected with the bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi. Not all blacklegged ticks carry these bacteria and not all people bitten by a blacklegged tick will get sick. The tick must be attached to a person for at least 24-48 hours before it can spread Lyme disease bacteria. Blacklegged ticks live on the ground in areas that are wooded or with lots of brush. The ticks search for hosts at ground level and grab onto a person or animal as they walk by. Ticks do not jump, fly, or fall from trees.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

The first symptoms of Rocky Mountain spotted fever typically begin 2-14 days after the bite of an infected tick. A tick bite is usually painless and about half of the people who develop Rocky Mountain spotted fever do not remember being bitten. The disease frequently begins as a sudden onset of fever and headache and most people visit a healthcare provider during the first few days of symptoms. Because early symptoms may be non-specific, several visits may occur before the diagnosis of Rocky Mountain spotted fever is made and correct treatment begins. Patients who had a particularly severe infection requiring prolonged hospitalization may have long-term health problems caused by this disease.

Tick Prevention

Along with Mosquito Squad’s barrier treatment, we also suggest following the 6 C’s in tick-proofing your yard for the season!

1. Clear out.

Reduce tick exposure by clearing out areas where lawn and tree debris gather. Ticks thrive in moist, shady areas. Locate compost piles away from play areas or high traffic.

2. Clean.

Eliminate leaf litter and brush by cleaning it up around the house and lawn edges, mow your grass regularly and keep the lawn short.

3. Choose plants.

Select plants and shrubs that are not attractive to deer and/or install physical barriers to keep deer out of your yard. Check with your local nursery to determine the best choices for your area.

4. Check hiding places.

Know tick hiding places and check them frequently. The base of fences, brick walls and patio retaining walls are popular hiding places.

5. Care for family pets.

Family pets can suffer from tick-borne disease and also carry infected ticks into the home. Talk to your veterinarian about using tick medication. As with all pest control products, be sure to follow directions carefully.

6. Call in the Pros.

Our Mosquito Squad of Melbourne-Saint Lucie professionals utilize both barrier sprays that eliminate adult ticks on the spot as well as “tick tubes” that effectively eliminate nymph ticks.
